How to calm your nervous system.
You may not have heard the phrase Nervous System Relaxation yet. It’s all about how to calm your nervous system. Here’s the scoop on what it is and a great way to achieve it.
Our autonomic nervous system is controlled by two basic systems. The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).
One controls our response to danger. You’ve probably heard it called your “fight or flight” mode. The medical name for it is our Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). And like being stressed, when our SNS is turned on all the time it causes our bodies to react negatively.
The other one controls our relaxation and recovery. Which is often called our “rest and digest” mode and medically it’s called our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). This is the one we want turned on. It controls the body’s ability to relax. When our body relaxes, it can start to heal.
Daily Stress
We experience stress daily. We stress out when we’re late for an appointment, driving in traffic, or when we miss an important phone call. Even just thinking about everything we need to do, can cause us stress and anxiety. It’s an ongoing battle. We’re always in overdrive. We feel it, and our bodies feel it. Our bodies react negatively to it. Eventually it can cause chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, migraines, and more. Our PNS just can’t kick in to downregulate or turn off our SNS.
Once our PNS is in control again, our body can relax, our nervous system calms down. When this happens it reduces our risk of cardiac heart disease and stroke; increases our digestive metabolism, so it’s better for our gut; and decreases migraines. What’s not to love about that?
How to kick in our PNS
