Do you feel like you’re always under stress? Always exhausted? Then you’re nervous system may be stuck in sympathetic overdrive. Constant feelings of stress can cause our sympathetic nervous system to be continuously activated. Which isn’t good for us!
Our nervous system has two states: sympathetic and parasympathetic. Our sympathetic nervous system activates during emotional excitement or stress. It also kicks in during exercise, strenuous activity, or under various pathological conditions (e.g., heart failure). This stimulation of our sympathetic system causes other organs to react. It alerts and prepares our body for a quick response.
It increases our heart rate, our eyes dilate, and we may begin to sweat. Think “Fight or Flight” reactions. If our body is in this state for too long, it could contribute to chronic health issues.
When does the sympathetic system turn off?
After a stressful event, the parasympathetic system counteracts the sympathetic system. Which means it restores the body to a restful state. Instead of “fight or flight” think “Rest and Digest”.
During rest, sleep, or emotional tranquility, the parasympathetic nervous system predominates. If we don’t get the “rest and digest” time our bodies need then our bodies could remain in a sympathetic state.
We may not feel our heart continue to race, or our pits still sweating, but the nervous system can stay in high gear. Soon, we may start to feel more and more stressed, or more fatigued. We may get sick more often. A LOT of things can happen in our body when our nervous system sticks in a sympathetic state.
Our goal isn’t to list all those negative affects. Our goal is to restore the nervous system back to a parasympathetic state. We want you to “rest and digest”!
