Millions of people suffer from insomnia. If you’re one of them, you’ve probably tried many ways to sleep better. Hot tea before bed, Melatonin, hot baths. And you know the list goes on, because you’ve probably tried most of them!
Why do we have trouble sleeping?
Our bodies have a natural sleep rhythm. It’s called our circadian rhythm. It’s a natural physical, mental, and behavioral rhythms that follows a 24 hour cycle. This cycle is primarily responsive to the amount light and darkness. It affects most living things.
Our circadian rhythm is an internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. Everyone is different. Some of us are night owls, others are early risers. If our sleep-wake cycle doesn’t match our daily needs, we’ll get out of sync.
For example, your job requires that you get up at five in the morning. You try to get to sleep by 9pm. Problem is, you’re a natural night owl. Your body doesn’t want to sleep that early.
Our systems get forced into a routine that isn’t “natural” for us. Our natural sleep rhythms, or our biological clock, gets set to a different “time zone” as it were.
Reset your Master Clock for better sleep
Our brains have a master clock that coordinates our biological clock. That master clock is a group of about 20,000 nerve cells. When these nerve cells get out of sync or stuck in another time zone, we have trouble sleeping.
How do we get those 20,000 nerve cells back in sync? We can do that by slowly “nudging” those nerves back into their natural pathways. That may sound technical and scary. But it’s not. Resetting those nerves back to their natural pathways helps your nerves to relax. Once your nerves are back to “normal” your natural sleep-wake rhythm can take over.
You may still have a hectic schedule. But your body will be able to get the sleep it needs to regenerate. That will give you better focus and more energy.
